Heading south for the winter… South Carolina

Well, our first Christmas in the US and NO snow! But the cold had us driving south in search for warmer weather. Lesson learnt: its hot and muggy down south in winter, should have packed for summer!

Americans are very patriotic and proud of their service men & women, which means there are plenty of memorials, battlefields and ships etc to visit. Charleston was no exception. We did a tour of Fort Sumter (where the Civil War began) and the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier, USS Clamagore Submarine and Vietnam Experience Exhibition at Patriots Point.

We walked around Historic Charleston enjoying the colourful architecture along Rainbow Row and experiencing some tasty southern fare.

I’m a huge Tom Hanks fan & Forrest Gump is one of my favourite movies, so thanks to a bit of Googling, we managed to find a few filming locations in nearby Beaufort, where we stopped for lunch on our way to Georgia. We even found Wilson’s cousin from Cast Away!
